In 2025, we still encounter outdated beliefs that view women’s bodies as sexual objects or as existing solely for men. All too often, women are criticised—or even attacked—simply for wearing what makes them feel comfortable. Such attitudes fuel gendered violence, shifting blame from the perpetrator to the victim and eroding women’s autonomy.
Beliefs like these excuse sexual harassment and absolve harassers of responsibility for their actions. When will women be free to dress as they wish and walk outside for themselves—without men perceiving them as sexual objects or assuming they dress for male approval?
Why Dress-Policing Must Stop
- Fuels Violence
Blaming women for their own abuse emboldens perpetrators.
- Reinforces Victim-Blaming
Suggesting women “invite” harassment by their clothing diverts accountability from the offender.
- Normalises Control
Policing attire teaches that it is acceptable to dictate women’s bodies—an attitude linked to higher rates of sexual violence in societies with strict dress codes.
- Erodes Autonomy
Fear of harassment for simply being oneself silences women and restricts freedom of expression .
The Human Toll
- Emotional Impact
Victims report increased shame, anxiety and self-censorship when they are blamed for their own abuse.
- Physical Danger
“Corrective” assaults—including public stripping—are used to punish perceived “indecency”.
- Silencing Effect
Fear of judgement discourages women from reporting harassment, perpetuating cycles of abuse.
